Each piece is accompanied with a card written by the curator at the Cathedral stating the following: "Freedom of religious expression is one of the founding principles of our nation. In our own time, America has become more religiously diverse then any other time in our history. This Family of Faiths jewerly was created in celebration of the freedom we cherish and in honor of Washington National Cathedral our National House of Prayer for all people."
-The Jerusalem Cross, said to represent the spread of Christianity from its origins in the Holy Land to the four corners of the earth, is a popular symbol of Western Christianity.
-Taoism and Confucianism are represented by the Chinese Yin Yang. Originally as a kind of diagram of celestial observation, it has come to symbolize the simultaneous duality and oneness of being: light and dark, male and female, cyclic change and eternal truth.
-A star called the Magen David, its shape traditionally ascribed to the shield of the biblical King David, represents Judaism.
-Hinduism is represented by the sacred syllable Ohm representing the absolute. -The Dharma Charka, or Wheel of Teaching, is one of the most important symbols of Buddhism. The circle or wheel represents the eternal cycle of birth and rebirth.
-Originally associated with the Ottoman empire, the Crescent and Star have been used as emblems of Islamic identity since the 15th century.
